Strengthened collaboration with Prysmian Group

Medea has added a further piece to the collaboration with Prysmian Group by providing engineering services for another major project for offshore cable market.

After having designed, in 2019, some structural upgrades to the Cable Path (such as inner cone of carousel, portside pickup arm, roller way and aft chute) of the cable-laying vessel “Giulio Verne” for the Hainan II project, the collaboration has recently been extended to the CRETA project planned for 2020/2021: the project requires the Giulio Verne to install a high-voltage alternating current cable system for the Crete-Peloponnese submarine interconnection in Greece.

The cable system, being of three-poles type, needs a large storage volume on board, with the consequent need to upgrade of the volumetric capacity of the carousel.   This upgrade has been engineered by Medea srl – Marine Design & Consultancy, appointed for the feasibility and the design of the systems involved in the upgrade.

Therefore the scope of work was primarily set on the main objective given by the volumetric extension of the Carousel and, consequentially, on the study of the interferences (such as geometric collisions, visibility reduction), on the impact assessment (structural and stability checks) and to the engineering of the solutions as follows:

  • Modular and removable extensions for the Carousel;
  • New Pickup Arm rated for offshore operations;
  • Verification of the slewing / luffing systems, rigging, foundations and mast e selection of the components to the replaced;
  • New rest cradles for both Pickup Arms;
  • Extensions of the towers for the control cabins
  • Other minor steelworks needed by the on-board installation;
  • On board assistance during mobilization works.

At a further stage, the strengthening of the aft deck has been specifically designed to hoist a 42t SWL winch for the purpose of the project.

“We are extremely proud to make our naval and offshore engineering skills available to Prysmian, the Italian Company world leader in the energy and telecommunications cables industry – comments the CEO of Medea, Gennaro Russolillo – we feel the esteem of the management in Milan and we pay it back with efficient projects, taking care of the certification aspects down to the smallest detail, indicating in advance and clearly all the multidisciplinary links, assisting the Prysmian personnel involved during the work on site on board the ship ”.
